Gravy
The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God has commanded that we share our food with the hungry. Each year, our Temple participates with other members of the Franklin Interfaith Council in helping the Franklin Food Pantry collect items to provide Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. In light of the greater food insecurity this year, the need for this program is apparent.
The Temple has been assigned the responsibility of collecting 70 cans of turkey gravy. The cans are due by November 10. You can leave your cans in a sealed bin outside the front door of the Temple building (there will be hand sanitizer there). Alternatively, if you would like to have your cans picked up from outside your house, let Andrew Rubenstein know at andrew@raalaw.com, and someone can pick it up from your porch or driveway on Sunday, November 8.
Thank you for participating in this important mitzvah.
Abundance
Abundance, it is said, can be found at the intersection of desire & fulfillment. Come learn and join the discussion. We all have ideas based on past experiences and future expectations. A diverse and experienced panel consisting of Zen Priest Kotatsu John Bailes, founder of One Heart Zen Center & the Wellesley College Buddhist Chaplain, Catholic Priest Parochial Vicar Fr. Gregory Vozzo of the Medfield & Norfolk Collaborative, and former Assistant Attorney General and Rabbi Thomas Alpert of Temple Etz Chaim in Franklin will share about fulfilment and abundance from their respective faiths and will take turns answering participants’ questions.

Zen Tangle
Join Sisterhood Thursday, November 5th at 7:30 for a creative and relaxing evening, learning to tangle. It is an easy-to-learn fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We will learn how to make simple lines, curves, dots and orbs for you to create your own tangle. No artistic skills are needed.
Last Kings
Did you know that two Jewish families who were originally from Baghdad controlled much of the commerce in Shanghai, China’s leading commercial city, until the Communists took it over in 1949? Did you know that those families created luxury hotels that set a world standard for excellence?
And did you know that they were also instrumental in saving thousands of European Jews from the Holocaust?
Please join us by Zoom on Wed., Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time as Northeastern University journalism professor and award-winning journalist Jonathan Kaufman discusses his new book, The Last Kings of Shanghai: The Rival Jewish Dynasties that Helped Create Modern China (that link will give you options to purchase if you’re interested). Forbes calls it “engrossing,” and The Economist says that it is “illuminating.”
