The Emotional Well-Being of Mature Adults in the Pandemic

Thanks to a grant from the Ruderman Synagogue Inclusion Project, Temple Etz Chaim is offering several workshops to help people deal with the stresses caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. These two programs are geared to mature adults. People should feel free to attend one or both sessions. There will be an interactive discussion focused on the needs of this segment of our community.

The program will be facilitated by Marjorie Sokoll, the Director of Aging & Spirituality at Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Boston. She has earned degrees in sociology and social work from Boston University and Tel Aviv University respectively, a graduate degree in counseling from Northeastern University, and a certificate of thanatology from the National Center for Death Education. She is a contributor to the book, Blessings for the Journey: A Jewish Healing Guide for Women with Cancer and the author of “The Healing Circle: A New Model for Nurturing Spirituality in Jewish Family Service Agencies” published in the Journal of Jewish Communal Service.

Rabbi’s Learning Session: Just in Time for Passover
The Egyptian Coloring of the Joseph Cycle

Egypt is prominent in the biblical narrative from the time Joseph arrives at Potiphar’s household (Genesis 39), to the time that the larger Israelite nation crosses through the Sea of Reeds (Exodus 15) during the Exodus. And in many ways the story of the Exodus from Egypt starts with the story of Joseph and his rise to power in Egypt. The backdrop of all of this is Egypt, and the biblical text goes to great lengths to make sure that we know it! Join us as we look at the often startling ways that the Bible paints its version of Egypt into these stories.

Dr. Sharon Keller has a Ph.D. in Bible and Egyptology. She is on the Classics faculty at Hofstra University. And she taught Rabbi Alpert when he was a student at Hebrew Union College.

Join us as Nick Taylor of Taylor & Taylor Whiskey presents a fascinating evening exploring the history, production, and taste of Charron 17 yr., 26 yr., 28 yr., and 30 yr. French Armagnac Brandy whose history goes back over 7 centuries.

Tasting kits will include 1 oz. samplings of the above vintages and the cost is $25. Kits will be available for pick up at the Dauer home in Franklin, MA.

Come join us for Purim on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7:00 for a spirited megillah reading and a lively dispute between advocates for these two taste treats. Listen to the reasoned and unreasoned arguments and make your vote count.

This year, we’re welcoming walkers, runners and bicyclists from near and far to join us in our social distancing 3K. All proceeds from this event will help support Temple Etz Chaim as we support our local community. Use your iphone, fitbit, pedometer, google maps, or any other tracking device to measure your distance. Walk, run or bike as an individual, with your family, or join a larger team remotely, and submit your results.
