We were shocked and disturbed to learn that our ‘We Stand With Israel’ sign was vandalized with red spray paint sometime late at night on April 1 or early in the morning on April 2. The sign was positioned underneath our Temple sign next to Washington Street. The light that illuminated our Temple sign was also destroyed. We are deeply troubled by this act of vandalism, which we recognize as a potentially antisemitic incident. We understand that the conflict in the Middle East engenders passionate and complex feelings, most of all a deep desire for lasting peace in the region and an end to civilian suffering for all people. However, these feelings should never catalyze acts of vandalism or attacks against others.
We are cooperating fully with the Franklin Police Department, who promptly notified us and are actively investigating. We express our sincere gratitude for their swift and professional response and have utmost confidence in their investigation. In light of this incident, we are reviewing our security measures and collaborating with local law enforcement and other congregations to enhance community awareness. We will refrain from further comment at this time to allow the investigation to proceed without interference. We appreciate the community’s concern and support.
